Welcome to Hibernate 2022 – Week Four

When I heard that snow days may be in jeopardy because online learning has become so accessible a quiet, “noooooo” rang in my head. A snow day is so much more than not having school, it is a gift to all of us that courageously embrace living in the north. Every winter I find myself praying at least once or twice for the snow to come down in such a large quantity that it stops us from getting out, it mutes all the noises around us, and it demands that we stay home. All expectations are dropped and the busyness that fills up our days disappears; a snow day ushers in slow living.

With online learning taking off and my youngest child graduating high school this spring I worry that the gift of a snow day may be a thing of the past. I need days where life moves slower, and expectations are lower. How will I get these days, if snow days are gone?

I think my answer lies in the practice of a sabbath. A day of the week that is for rest, worship and play. Marking off time on my calendar each week to play board games with my family, to blast worship music in my kitchen while cooking a favorite meal, and a time when my phone is silenced and the screens are still. I need sabbath days that exist throughout the calendar year. Slow days that can be full of the quiet peace, playfulness, and coziness of snow days.

There is an art to having the perfect snow day. With the month of March still stretched out in front of us, we have a good possibility of at least one more snow day. But, if work doesn’t close down and you have to go in or we don’t get this one last magical day because the weather turns warmer, a perfect snow day can still exist.

This week consider what a perfect snow day would look like to you. Write down all the details; the food, activities, naps, etc. Then look at your calendar and mark of a day to have your perfect snow day!

My perfect snow day is:

  • Building a fort in my family room filled with warm blankets and pillows.

  • Watching a feel-good movie, Age of Adaline

  • Popping popcorn for lunch

  • A full French press of coffee

  • A good audiobook that I can fall asleep to.

  • A walk outside with my favorite mittens

  • Leggings, a baggy sweater, knit hat, and men’s wool socks

Once you have your cozy sweater on, it is time to find comfort in the perfect bowl of soup and a chunk of warm bread. Many local bakeries like Bay Bread in Traverse City offer day old bread at half the price. These pieces are perfect for dipping into a bowl of soup.

Ingredients:

  • 5 quarts popped popcorn

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

  • 2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes

  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • 4 to 6 drops hot pepper sauce

Directions:

Place popcorn in a large bowl. Combine remaining ingredients; drizzle over popcorn and toss until well coated.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup rosemary

  • 10 cups popped popcorn

  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

  • 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper

Directions:

Place popcorn in a large bowl; drizzle with butter. Sprinkle with cheese, salt, pepper and rosemary; toss to coat.

Welcome to Hibernate 2022 – Week Three

It’s 3:19pm on a Saturday and I am lamenting pulling my body from my warm nook where I have been absorbed in a magazine. I picked it up in one of those neighborhood libraries I found when taking a walk downtown. I have said “yes” to going to a casual dinner tonight. I want to delight in the invitation, but I also want to take my cozy afternoon with me. A sweater could be the answer to this internal dilemma. A few weeks ago, when half my family was ill, and school had gone online for the umpteenth time I slipped into a thrift store to embrace a moment of quiet.

There is something about searching through the racks of clothes and looking for hidden treasures in the backroom that makes my heart sing. I can let life go on around me, while I discover a new gift for my home or myself. On this trip I found a cozy wool sweater. It has been well loved which makes it all the softer. The cuffs are a bit frayed and it has plenty of room for base layers. This will be my answer tonight – my ability to leave my house with the coziness of warmth wrapped around me.

Northern Michigan is full of thrift stores. Zany’s Consignment in downtown Traverse City, the Goodwill in Acme, The Roost in Suttons Bay, Samaritan’s Closet in Lake Leelanau, Hidden Treasures Consignment Shop in Cadillac, and on, and on we could go.

Each shop is full of treasures and if they could speak they would tell of adventures taken, heartbreaks that occurred, and great memories that were made. I love that when I put on clothing from a thrift shop, I am putting on a bit of history.

February is the month for winter sales. Sweaters that will soon be replaced with summer outfits are waiting to be purchased. If you need a little pick me up this week consider stuffing $10 in your pocket and head to a thrift store. Look for a sweater that will keep you warm throughout these last weeks of winter. If shopping alone feels like a drag, consider taking a friend, daughter, mom, or co-worker. A couple hours digging for the perfect used sweater may just put a smile on your face.

Once you have your cozy sweater on, it is time to find comfort in the perfect bowl of soup and a chunk of warm bread. Many local bakeries like Bay Bread in Traverse City offer day old bread at half the price. These pieces are perfect for dipping into a bowl of soup.

  • 6 strips (uncooked) bacon cut into small pieces

  • 3 Tablespoons butter

  • 1 medium yellow onion chopped (about 1.5 cup)

  • 3 large garlic cloves minced

  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 ½ lbs gold potatoes peeled and diced into pieces no larger than 1” (about 6 Large potatoes for me)

  • 4 cups chicken broth

  • 2 cups milk

  • ⅔ cup heavy cream

  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper

  • ¼ - ½ teaspoon ancho chili powder

  • ⅔ cup sour cream

  • Shredded cheddar cheese, chives, and additional sour cream and bacon for topping (optional)

  1. Place bacon pieces in a large Dutch Oven or soup pot over medium heat and cook until bacon is crisp and browned.

  2. Remove bacon pieces and set aside, leaving the fat in the pot.

  3. Add butter and chopped onion and cook over medium heat until onions are tender (3-5 minutes).

  4. Add garlic and cook until fragrant (about 30 seconds).

  5. Sprinkle the flour over the ingredients in the pot and stir until smooth (use whisk if needed).

  6. Add diced potatoes to the pot along with chicken broth, milk, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and ancho chili powder. Stir well.

  7. Bring to a boil and cook until potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork (about 10 minutes).

  8. Reduce heat to simmer and remove approximately half*** of the soup to a blender (be careful, it will be hot!)

  9. Return the pureed soup to the pot and add sour cream and reserved bacon pieces, stir well.

  10. Allow soup to simmer for 15 minutes before serving.

  11. Top with additional sour cream, bacon, cheddar cheese, or chives. Enjoy!

Welcome to Hibernate 2022 – Week Two

When I was a little girl, I had an oversized, overstuffed white and pink rocking chair. It sat in the corner of my room, where the walls tucked around it and there was just enough space to rock. When I had the overwhelming desire to be held, I would curl up with a blanket in my rocking chair. Safety was found in the small space. Enveloped in this space, life was quieter and gentler. As I grew, I brought audio books into my space. I think there is something in each of us that yearns for the comforting cadence that exists when someone reads to us.

I have a nook in my home and as an adult my soul still needs a small space, to feel held in. When the storms are raging around me or within me, I find rest in this space. Tucked in with my Bible, a hot drink, and cozy blanket my nook embraces me. This February what small space, what corner in your world can you find rest in?

“Come to me all who are weary, and you will find rest” Matthew 11:28

“Are we there yet?”….this was the twenty-second time in an hour my daughter asked me if we had reached our destination. We were South Dakota bound for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I thought it would be a great adventure for my small family of three. Yet somewhere between Southern Michigan and Chicago I felt a heavy loneliness traveling with my two small children. Pulling into a Cracker Barrel to hit the restrooms and get some snacks for the road I eyed the audio book section. Every Cracker Barrel has a rack of audio books that can be checked out and returned at any other Cracker Barrel in the nation. I grabbed one and off we went. What a game changer! My children were engaged, and I felt like I had a traveling companion.

My joy over audio books has never diminished and they now rejoin me in my nook. This week consider trying an audiobook, together as a family or one just for you.

May this week be filled with a sweet treat, a warm hug, and a smile of encouragement!

Welcome to Hibernate 2022!

Bookstores are an easy and cozy space to spend time in when the sky is dark and the temperatures are cold. I have loved children’s books my whole life. Finding a quaint bookstore, with warm lights, soft chairs, and a delightful children’s section is a slice of heaven for me. I can get lost in the shelves of books for hours and in the quiet corners of a bookstore, for a moment, I can hibernate.

As Northern Michiganders moving through February, we invite you to find moments to hibernate. To get cozy, and allow yourself to rest your mind, body and spirit. Each year at Single MOMM we challenge each other to hibernate well. To nourish our bodies, our minds, and our spirits. To allow the slower pace of winter to refresh us. As busy moms we get that books get interrupted, cuddling under a cozy blanket may mean being joined by wiggling children who let in the cold air, and that hours of hibernating may not be a reality. But, perhaps a moment of hibernating can be squeezed into your day.

Over the next three weeks we will send out a Sunday evening hibernate link. You will find a warm note of encouragement, a soothing recipe to try, and a cozy activity to consider.

Here is to a cozy spirit, the warmth of a hot drink in our hands, and hibernating!

Jennifer

Hibernating started a bit early this year in my family. My son had major surgery at the beginning of January and doing our normal activities outside came to a sudden halt. When he was well enough, I started taking drives with him to reduce the blue feelings and to get us out of the house. On one of our adventures, we landed at a cozy bookstore in Suttons Bay, MI – Bay Books. The small bookstore was filled with familiar books I love and delightful books that gave off cozy vibes.

This book was one of my favorite finds!

Join our staff this week and find a cozy bookstore to wander through, sit in for a bit, and find a book that warms your soul.

This Mexican cinnamon tea is the perfect hot cup of liquid to warm-up our bodies and lift our moods. Cinnamon has also been known to help with circulation and bring a feeling of warmth.
